Rachel Tronstein joined the SSRC Knowledge Institutions Program Area in November 2004 following a brief foray into electoral politics. She is generally interested in the role of education in improving welfare and different approaches to knowledge production. Her work at the Council focuses on the role of the public sector in the creation of knowledge, and the organization and design of higher education. Rachel was active in the design of the undergraduate academic program at the University of Michigan while serving as president of the government representing liberal arts undergraduates. She also testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce on the design of reform mathematics programs at the secondary level.
Tronstein holds an MSc in the politics of the world economy from the London School of Economics; her dissertation considers how education might decrease the incidence of child labor in the United States and India. Tronstein received a BA from the University of Michigan, where she studied political science and anthropology. Her honors thesis examines accountability under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. She also did coursework at Beijing University, and is generally interested in the geopolitics of U.S.-China relations. Rachel serves as a member of the Echoing Green Social Investment Council.
