Josh DeWind, Director of the SSRC International Migration Program since 1994, received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology of Columbia University in 1977. He is a Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College, City University of New York, where he initiated the college's Program on International Human Rights (1990-present) and directed its Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program (1989-1999). He has published numerous books, reports, and articles related to migration. Most recently he co-edited with Charles Hirschman and Philip Kasinitz The Handbook of International Migration: The American Experience, (New York: Russell Sage Foundation, 1999), which is a collection of interdisciplinary essays surveying the field of U.S. immigration studies based on a 1996 conference of the International Migration Program titled Becoming American/America Becoming. In addition, he is a board member of the National Coalition for Haitian Rights and was a founding board member of both the Center for Immigrants Rights and the National Immigration Forum.
